Have you ever left a lecture or presentation full of positive and uplifting energy? The energy you felt made you feel like you were on top of the world and you could achieve anything! Also, transferred with this positive energy, was a sense of comfort, security, and trust about the lecturer. When this happens, the goal of the lecturer has been achieved. Wouldn't it be great if you could feel the same kind of energy when you are working with horses? You should. Otherwise you and your horse will not retain what you are learning together. While demonstrating a procedure is one part of teaching, motivating the student is much more important. It does not matter what message a teacher is trying to convey, without transmitting the proper energy the subject will loose its impact. A dull, lifeless speaker can turn an interesting subject into an unplanned nap. A speaker who is unsure of what he is doing or is nervous about his presentation will have trouble selling his qualifications. This is nothing new to us. We are continually searching for teachers who are confident and motivating, because they can be more fun. What is not obvious to most people is they themselves must also be confident and motivating to their horse. This is very important when interacting with horses because you are your horse's leader and teacher. You must be able to stand before your horse and sell him on your way of thinking and gain his confidence. How you use your emotional energy will demonstrate the difference between success and failure.
Emotional energy is used as a means of communication. Horses have empathy for others. This enables them to sense and identify emotional feelings. Horses know when you are in a nervous emotional state versus a confident emotional state. How each horse responds to your emotional energy will vary with different horse personalities. When you allow your horse to sense that you are scared, one personality may also become scared, while another personality may see this as a weakness and take advantage of you. If you are able to transmit confident energy to your horse during a perceived scary situation, your horse will trust you. You should give great thought and planning to being able to control your emotional energy because, emotional transference is used as a language in horse communication. Most horse owners know what to teach their horse however, where they go wrong is the lack of a good, convincing presentation.
