Leg Markings

To determine true markings all white hair must be identified by underlaying pink skin. This is done by wetting your horse's legs so the pink skin can then be seen.

Note that where pink skin meets the hoof, the hoof will be light colored otherwise the hoof will be dark.

 No Markings

No white hair is visible.

 Coronet

White hair extending up to one inch above the coronet band.

Pastern

White hair between the coronet and the bottom of the fetlock joint.

 

 

 Fetlock

White hair above the the pastern, but below the top of the fetlock joint.

 Sock

White hair above the fetlock not extending above the mid point of the cannon.

 Stocking

White hair extending beyond the mid point of the cannon bone.
